Ruben Amorim has challenged his Manchester United players to run themselves into the ground like Harry Maguire did against Arsenal. Maguire had to come off in extra-time on Sunday because he was unwell before United’s 10 men dumped Arsenal out of the FA Cup on penalties. Amorim hopes Maguire can return against Southampton on Thursday at Old Trafford and says he wants his other United players to show the same character.

Maguire, 31, has been immense since Amorim resurrected his career after Erik ten Hag binned him and the United boss says he is displaying real leadership. “He was sick in the last game, he was dead in the end,” said Amorim. “That’s what I want from every player. He has to continue to do a good job. I think he changed the way he sees himself. More than that, I believe a lot in Harry.

“You can see the way he plays now is different because he believes a lot in himself. I think we have to praise Harry more than I can do, he’s doing a great job.”. Maguire is making Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation work because he is perfectly at home in the middle of their defensive three. “He’s always in the centre,” said the Portuguese. “He’s not on the left side or the right side. I think he’s really good with the ball in that position.

“Arsenal put in a lot of crosses and with Harry, we controlled that area. That’s really important, set-pieces are really important for us. You can see in this league, it’s really important to be good at set-pieces. I think the system is really good for Harry. But like I said, the most important thing is Harry. He feels more like an important player in the team and as a leader. I feel that he’s a leader again.”.
