Despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s best shirtless efforts, his film has had ‘the worst launch’ in recent Sony history with an abysmal 17% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie hit cinemas on December 13, opening to the tune of $43million (£34.1million) worldwide — on a $110million (£86.5million) budget.
The studio has struggled to find success with its Spider-Man spin-off films, which is linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Madame Web and Morbius have been notoriously bad but Sony boss Tony, who is leaving the studio, admitted that Kraven has reached a new low.
The Sony Pictures boss told LA Times: ‘Unfortunately, [Kraven] that we launched last weekend, and my last film launch, is probably the worst launch we had in the 7 1/2 years so that didn’t work out very well, which I still don’t understand, because the film is not a bad film.’.
Kraven follows Aaron as the titular hero, real name Sergei Kravinoff, whose fractured relationship with his relationship with his gangster father (Russell Crowe) motivated him to become the greatest and most feared hunter. The film, based on Marvel comics, also stars Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott, Fred Hechinger, and Alessandro Nivola.
