The brutal gale force winds of Storm Éowyn has claimed its first life, as a man was killed by "falling roof tiles" amidst the record gusts. The storm claimed its first victim on Friday as winds of up to a record-breaking 114mph battered parts of the country, with Northern Ireland, North Wales, Cumbria the North East and southern Scotland the worst hit regions. Rare "danger to life" red warnings have been issued over threats posed by the storm on Friday.
In Irvine, Scotland, a 49-year-old man was killed in Irvine by "falling roof tiles", the Daily Record reported. His family have been informed by Police Scotland. Follow the latest on Storm Eowyn with our live blog. One neighbour said of the tragedy: "The first I heard was when the police knocked at the door about 10.30am. I heard it had happened at about 6.30am.
"They didn't say much but I believe he was found lying under the archway. On any other morning I would have been out and would have seen him.". Another added: "The police came round and asked a few questions but they didn't say anything about who the man was. My son called me to say they'd heard the man had died. I don't know who he was.".
The area was cordoned off this morning as police investigated the tragedy, which has now been lifted. Several roof tiles can still be seen in the vicinity. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.10am on Friday, 24 January, 2025, we were called to a report of an unresponsive man in East Road, Irvine. Emergency services attended and a 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His family is aware.
