Strasbourg tram crash sparks major incident as dozens injured in horror station smash

Dozens have been injured and one feared dead after two trams collided at a major station in France, as emergency crews tend to those hurt. Emergency crews are at the scene at the Gare Centrale station in Strasbourg, in the east of the country. Initial estimates suggest around 30 people were injured in the incident, with local reports suggesting one of the drivers was killed in the tragedy - although it is yet to be confirmed.

Videos shared on X show the aftermath of the coming together of the vehicles this afternoon. Amid chaotic scenes, smoke can be seen billowing from the tunnel and blaring alarms can be heard at the busy station where some people are laid on the ground with injuries suffered in the collision. Another video posted on X showed severe damage to the front and rear of the two trams involved in this afternoon's accident.

The accident is is believed to have been caused when one of the trams was put onto a track where another was idle in the major station in a switching error. An investigation is set to be launched to discover what happened at the busy station.

One witness said: "I just saw what happened in Strasbourg. It's very serious, an accident between two trams, there would be five serious injuries and 30 minor injuries. We sincerely hope there is no death.". Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service said on X: "Tram accident at the Gare Centrale stop at Strasbourg. Numerous resources mobilized. Avoid the areas of Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson and facilitate access for emergency services.”.
