Agas, butter dishes and teapots may seem like old-fashioned household goods - but they've become popular once again. New research has found Millennials are bringing back retro home items, with 70% of them saying they are increasingly embracing interior design styles once considered to be more traditional.

Farmhouse sinks are the top item that has made a comeback, with 42% of thirty-somethings saying they have one in their kitchen. Agas and terracotta tiles rounded off the top three, while butter dishes, teapots and wood burning stoves are also back. A cosy feel, focus on comfort rather than style and the fact that retro products provide a timeless look that won’t date are behind their surge in popularity. However, even though the nation loves the vintage look, the survey from retailer B&Q also revealed the modern kitchen essentials we could never live without, including air fryers, coffee machines and USB plugs.

The poll found 71% of respondents believe they have a keen eye for interior design, with the most popular places to find inspiration being Instagram, Pinterest and TV shows. Tori Summers, kitchen showrooms director at B&Q, said: “The resurgence of the retro farmhouse aesthetic reflects a desire for comfort and timeless design in our homes.".

To help customers create the retro farmhouse aesthetic at home, B&Q has launched two new shaker kitchens – Ashmead and Tydeman – to its range and two new trend-led colours to the Alpinia collection. Each is fully customisable, with Tydeman available in a range of trend-led colours, including a rich blackberry and dusky antique rose.
