BRIDGET Jones is back for a fourth and final chapter and leading stars Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant recently dazzled at the premiere. Sadly - as the trailer reveals - Britain’s famous singleton finds herself once again riding solo following the tragic death of Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth. The poignant clip sees Bridget being called a “widow” and “battling motherhood alone” - although she does seem happy about Leo Woodall’s character coming into her life – a handsome 29-year-old named Roxster.

While the beloved film franchise, which first came out in 2001, has a firm fan base, there are a number of plot discrepancies which have been pointed out by fans over the years. When we are introduced to singleton Bridget in film one, she is portrayed as a bumbling and often tipsy 32-year-old living in London. However, her one-bedroom Zone One apartment is anything but tragic, which has led to many questioning how Bridget could have afforded it on a publishing salary.

The flat is located in the tourist hotspot Borough Market, and estate agents have estimated it would be worth close to £1million with its SE1 postcode. However, back in the 1990s the area didn’t have the prestige that it does today, with some saying it would have been worth considerably less. In film two, (Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason), our favourite heroine is content and smug having bagged Mark Darcy at the end of the first movie.

The second installment begins at Christmas, and in the opening Bridget states she’s "been in a functional relationship with an adult male for six wonderful weeks.”. However, some have pointed out that she actually began to date Mark the previous Christmas, meaning they would have been together for approximately one year. When Bridget goes into labour, the geography of her hospital journey doesn’t quite add up, if you are a Londoner.

Although she lives in Borough, she ends up on a dramatic journey to UCH (University College Hospital), which is miles away near Euston. This is instead of her popping into the nearer Guy’s and St Thomas’ in London Bridge. Furthermore, when Jack shows up on his motorbike to help Bridget in labour, he and Mark jointly carry Bridget for miles to hospital. However, many have questioned why they didn’t put her on the motorbike and wheel her along.

Fans of Bridget quickly took to social media to share their sadness at Mark dying, as one person wrote: “What do you MEAN there is a fourth Bridget Jones movie releasing soon, and they KILLED MR. DARCY?!”. A second penned: “I was not prepared to cry over the death of Mr. Darcy in the new Bridget Jones movie; IS MARK DARCY DEAD???”. Another echoed: “My heart sank seeing that Mr. Darcy died in the new Bridget Jones trailer. Why couldn't they have their happily ever after?”.
