Thomas Frank hailed Liverpool as the best team in the world after seeing substitute Darwin Nunez score two injury-time goals to break Brentford hearts. The Bees looked set to follow up their midweek draw with Manchester City with another precious point - only for Nunez to strike at the double.

Brentford boss Frank said: “We handled Liverpool well for 90 minutes - just not in the last four. Overall it was a good performance against a fantastic Liverpool team who I think are the best in the Premier League and the best in the world. “We have faced City, Arsenal and now Liverpool in a short period - and I think Liverpool are a level above the other two. They are more complete in all phases of the game.

“We competed well, defended well, and gave very few big chances away. I don’t think 0-0 would have been an unfair result. They had more of the ball and more opportunities, but they had some luck with the goal. “Liverpool are exceptionally good but things are also going their way. Physically they are outstanding and tactically and technically they are the same.”.

Kop boss Slot paid tribute to his Liverpool players for silencing the doubters. Slot said: “If we had not scored today then the headlines would have been ‘Liverpool drop points – AGAIN.’ No-one would have told you we had 37 shots. What a display! How many teams were able to have 37 shots against Brentford? And now, because of us scoring two, the emphasis will be on that.
