With the sparkle of Christmas officially over, January can bring some challenges - and put significant strain on relationships. A recent survey found that couples are more likely to break up after the festive season, usually because December can be a high stress month. For some, the festive period is the last straw and January brings fresh perspective on priorities in a relationship.

After a whirlwind of emotions over Christmas and New Year, it's easy to see why couples reach breaking point in January when they find themselves in a quieter and more reflective space. To avoid anyone getting blindsided by a sudden change of heart, relationship expert Anne-Sofie Koktved has revealed warning signs your relationship may be on the brink.

"The new year brings resolutions and a focus on self-improvement, which can sometimes lead people to re-evaluate their relationships," the expert tells the Mirror. "Combined with the dark, cold days of winter and post-holiday fatigue, these factors often bring hidden tensions to the surface.".

The expert says there are usually signs that a break-up is looming, however she notes they aren't always immediately obvious. The first one to look out for, according to her, is emotional distance which she said is one of the "most telling" indicators.

"If your partner seems less engaged in conversations, avoids discussing meaningful topics, or becomes less affectionate, it may reflect underlying issues." You may also notice some behavioural changes such as wanting to spend more time alone, as well as disengaging from your social circles as well as seeming preoccupied, the pro says.
