SAS Rogue Heroes is back on BBC One, with the second instalment unfolding after the capture of David Stirling (portrayed by Connor Swindells). Paddy Mayne (Jack O'Connell) was left to take the reins in his absence, and the show began on a sorrowful note.

Paddy Mayne penned a letter to his mother, explaining his inability to attend his father's funeral. His voice echoed: "Dearest mother, I write to you with a heavy, heavy heart to tell you that I will not be able to attend dad's funeral. "I applied to my superior officers in Cairo to grant me compassionate leave. For reasons they didn't care to explain, this permission was denied to me.

"As I'm sure you can imagine, Ma, this unexplained refusal left me in a poor frame of mind and has led me to become somewhat aggrieved.". He was then seen at the Palm Court Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, flipping a table in a fit of anger and shattering a wooden chair into pieces.

To the shock of the other hotel guests, he continued his tirade, venting about how "GHQ Cairo has got my f****** goat". When armed officers attempt to restrain him, he retaliates, knocking two of the men to the ground before engaging in a brawl with several others.

In reality, Paddy was indeed denied leave to attend his father's funeral, which sent him spiralling emotionally downwards. As the conflict escalated, Paddy's behaviour became increasingly introverted, and the passing of his father only served to exacerbate matters.
