As far as fiery ex-BFF feuds go, Charli XCX's apparent fallout with Taylor Swift is up there. The former mates are said to have had a bitter spat for a number years, with there appearing to be no love lost between the pair. This weekend sees Charli take to the stage at the Crypto.com Arena for this year's eagerly anticipated Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As well as performing, she is nominated for gongs in seven categories, including Record of the Year for 360. Alleged foe, Taylor Swift is also in the category for Fortnight.

The duo will also go head to head in the Album of the Year category. So what better time to look back at their alleged rivalry?. Charli's album BRAT last year seemed to reignite the feud between the duo, despite previously opening for the Shake It Off star. One tune in particular got fans talking. The song titled Sympathy Is A Knife hears Charli sing: “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show, Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick." It led to fans quickly thinking the lyrics were regarding Taylor's former relationship with Matty Healy - who is in 1975 alongside Charli's fiance George Daniel.

However, the alleged feud is thought to have started well before the latest album. In 2018, Charli was alongside Taylor on her Reputation tour. Despite the occasion allowing her to showcase her talents to thousands as one of the opening acts, she seemed less than impressed with the fanbase. Speaking to Pitchfork after the tour, Charli said: "As an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to five-year-olds.".

She did say she was "really grateful" for the opportunity and later said what she was said had been taken out of control. Following backlash online, Charli took to Twitter/X to explain herself. She wrote: "I say in the article and have said many times before, I am extremely grateful to Taylor for inviting me to open for her. She’s one of the biggest artists of my generation and the Reputation tour was one of the biggest tours in history.”.

She later went on to try to clarify further, saying she meant the timing she came out to perform as she is used to a later slot. "Leading up to that tour I’d been playing a (ton) of 18+ club shows, and so to be onstage in front of all ages was new to me and made me approach my performances with a whole new kind of energy," she went on. Despite all the speculation, both singers continue to deny there is actually any issue. However, some fans refuse to believe them.
