Britain was last night battered by stormy weather - just days before Christmas. Winds of up to 82mph were recorded in parts of the UK as the busy festive travel weekend continued to see disruption unleashed by high winds and heavy snowfall. At Belfast City Airport on Sunday, an Aer Lingus regional flight operated by Emerald Airlines was was forced to make a "hard landing" on the runway in adverse conditions, causing the nose wheel to collapse. Four members of crew were onboard at the time.
Heathrow Airport confirmed that around 100 flights were cancelled on Sunday, and passengers would be best advised to check with their airline before travelling. The Met Office yellow warnings for wind, which came into force at 7am on Saturday, remained in place until 9pm on Sunday, after days of nightmare travel conditions.
The forecaster has also issued a new yellow warning for ice in parts of north-east Scotland, coming into force at 9pm on Sunday until 10am on Monday. Wind warnings remain in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and in England the warnings cover the North East, North West, South West and West Midlands as well as Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Hampshire.
Conditions are expected to improve this week after bad weather caused disruption during the Christmas getaway period. The Met Office has forecast a "grey Christmas" with some sunny spells and "extremely mild" temperatures. It comes after a "perfect storm" of adverse weather conditions and road congestion led to widespread disruption during the Christmas getaway.
