Pensioners have been warned over potentially missing money this winter. Most Winter Fuel Payments should have been paid in November, or will land into your account this month. If you're eligible for the benefit, you should have already received a letter by now telling you how much you will get and which bank account it will be paid into.
However, If you don't get a letter, or the money hasn't been received by January 29, 2025, you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre here. Winter Fuel Payments can be worth up to £300, so it's important you check your eligibility and chase up if you don't receive it, especially considering Ofgem's energy price cap is slated to increase once more.
This year, around 10 million pensioners previously eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment will no longer be entitled to it at all. It follows Labour's Autumn Budget, where chancellor Rachel Reeves said such a drastic cut was necessary after finding a £22 billion black hole in the public finances left by the Conservative government. However, around 1.5 million people will still be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment this year if they were born before 23 September in 1958, live in England, Wales, or Northern Island and receive one of the following:.
According to GOV UK, you will also need to have been 'getting a benefit during the qualifying week of 16-22 September 2024' to be eligible for this year's Winter Fuel Payment. If you have been in hospital for more than a year, or were in prison during 16-22 September, you will not be eligible for the payment.
