The World Darts Championship has seen its first seed fall as four-time semi-finalist James Wade was knocked out in the second round. Wade, the 16th seed, won the first leg of the round two match - but then lost the next eight in succession as Jermaine Wattimena took control.
In the evening session, veteran American Leonard Gates produced a vintage display to defeat Scotland's Cameron Menzies 3-1. Gates, 54, landed a monster 122 checkout - hitting two treble 18s - to seal his place in the second round with Menzies, partner of Fallon Sherrock, fighting back tears as his hopes slipped away.
Later, former champion Gerwyn Price blitzed past Keane Barry 3-0 to secure his place in the third round. The Iceman - whose 2021 title win came behind closed doors at Alexandra Palace - had not reached the last eight at any major tournament this year, but wasted little time in racing through the opening set without dropping a leg.
The next three weeks at Alexandra Place are the highlight of the festive period for many sport fans, with the action culminating in the final on January 3. Teenage sensation Luke Littler will take centre stage for the first time on December 21, when he could take on Fallon Sherrock in what would be a blockbuster encounter.
It is now six years since Michael van Gerwen was crowned world champion and he begins his bid to end that wait against James Hurrell or Jim Long, while Gary Anderson has been in superb form in recent months and kicks his campaign off on December 22 when he’ll go up against Jeffrey de Graaf or Rashad Sweeting.
