While Aldi is best known for its middle aisle, there’s one other section of the store that shoppers often flip out over. We’re talking, of course, about the bakery aisle, because who can resist the allure of pastries, bread and cakes?. And it seems this part of the store is only going to get better, as the discount retailer has announced plans to upgrade all its supermarkets, with a particular focus on improving the bakery section.

The business is going to be splashing a whopping £67million to upgrade its stores across the UK this year, and in addition to improving the bakery fixtures, they’ll also be making changes to health and beauty sections, as well as the fridges in the chilled aisle, where they’ll be upgrading the units to reduce carbon emissions (equivalent to heating over 6,500 homes).

Julie Ashfield, the managing director of buying at the supermarket, recently explained to Metro why the fridges they use, and the doors on them, are so important. She said: ‘The addition of fridge doors reduces each store’s energy consumption by approximately 20%, equivalent to a carbon emissions saving of up to 20 tonnes per store each year. That’s around eight return flights from London to New York.’.

The changes to the fridges and bakery section are all part of a new phase of Aldi’s store enhancement programme – which the company has been working on since 2017. As well as updating their stores this year, Aldi also has some upcoming store openings, with new supermarkets planned to pop up in locations such as Fulham Broadway in London, Billericay in Essex, and Cheadle in Stoke-on-Trent.

You bet your arse I’m gonna make my way through the whole lot @Aldi UK 💙 #aldi #aldibakery. @Aldi UK has only got a bakery now 😍😍😍 #fyp #trendingtiktok #aldiuk #aldistowmarket #rundontwalk #omg. While the changes being made are to the bakery aisle, it seems many people are only just discovering that some of Aldi’s 1,000+ supermarkets have actual in-store bakeries.

On TikTok, videos were shared at the end of 2024 showing off some of the bakeries, with fans thinking it was ‘about time’ Aldi got them, and saying they were ‘revolutionary’. People have hailed the products as ‘amazing’, declared Aldi bakery as a ‘holy place’ and proclaimed that it rivals high street favourite Greggs. In particular, customers have hailed the cinnamon buns as ‘the best’ item you can buy there, with numerous posts on X about them.

It’s likely many shoppers would love to see the in-store bakeries rolled out nationwide, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem the retailer has any plans to do so at this stage. When asked about the opening of more in-store bakeries, a spokesperson told Metro there were no updates to share.

Aldi also recently hit the headlines after launching a new product that’s a UK first – and got fans of 90s sitcom Friends talking. ChoViva is a cocoa-free chocolate alternative from Germany, and it’s made its debut in Aldi, as part of the bargain retailer’s Easter range. The product is said to look and taste like the real thing, but instead of being made from cocoa as is traditional, it’s been formed in a more sustainable way using fermented oats and sunflower seeds, as well as sugar, vegetable fat, skimmed milk powder and emulsifiers.

ChoViva features in Aldi’s Dairyfine Peanut Butter Mini Eggs (£1.49 for 90g), offering a cocoa-free version of the sweet treat, and shoppers online can’t help but compare it to the Mockolate product featured in Friends. On Reddit, u/100ProofPixel asked: ‘I can’t be the only person that went straight to Mockolate?’.

Similarly, on TikTok @heymacksarrow said: ‘It’s giving that time Monica had to recipe test for fake chocolate.’. Aldi also recently caused a stir with its Dairyfine Curious Inventions bar, which comes in white or milk chocolate and is filled with popping candy and cherry jellies, has been transformed into a £3.99 egg for the Spring season. It went viral online as the original chocolate bar has long been compared to a Cadbury favourite – the Marvellous Creations, which is strikingly similar, but made with either Cadbury White or Dairy Milk chocolate.
