Mr Mercedes, the heart-pounding crime thriller based on Stephen King’s bestselling series, is leaving Amazon Prime in a matter of days. The three-season show starring Brendan Gleeson follows retired police detective Bill Hodges as he privately tracks down a demented killer taunting him through ‘lurid letters and emails’ in a crusade for justice.

The series with supernatural elements, also starring Holland Taylor and Harry Treadaway, aired from 2017 to 2019 and was later acquired by Peacock. It scored an impressive average score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans able to watch all 30 episodes in one fell swoop – making it the perfect binge-watch. ‘Mr Mercedes on Amazon Prime is an amazing series, totally binge-worthy (especially season 3)…well done,’ X user pam_schofield praised on X.

‘Finally started watching the TV series of Mr Mercedes, based on the Stephen King book. Brendan Gleeson crackles on screen and is a delight. I’m glad I finally got around to it,’ markplynch said. ‘What an absolute piece of art. Thrilling, suspenseful. Dark, and very disturbing. A hidden gem!’ an anonymous Rotten Tomatoes user echoed. ‘Fantastic series based on the Stephen King novel. Atmospheric, creepy, masterful storytelling with an outstanding cast. Not to be missed by thriller / horror fans even if you aren’t a fan of Stephen King,’ Craig B shared.

‘Actually I loved this show, it reminded me of The Sinner, my another favorite TV series about weird detective looking for murderers. Great cast, great story,’ another user shared. One thing is for sure, it’s faithful to the beloved books. ‘Very close to Stephen King’s excellent book. Brendan Gleeson is in fine form and Harry Treadaway is positively evil!’ one user shared. And the love from fans was echoed by critics.

Entertainment Weekly praised the show as ‘one of the most sturdily constructed thrillers on television’ and TV Fanatic called it ‘electric’. The Banshees of Inisherin star told GQ that the ‘properly fleshed-out character’ drew him to the role. The Irish actor continued: ‘Not just a curmudgeon but very soulful in a way. He’s on the point of suicide with regard to the emptiness in his life. He had sacrificed his family and everything he has for his work.

‘I did a limited amount of research on retired detectives, particularly on the huge suicide rates amongst people who have given themselves over to that kind of work, watched all the detritus of humanity, tried to do something about it and fell short or actually achieved something, but then suddenly they’re not allowed to anymore. ‘At the beginning of the show, Bill Hodges’s family was gone, [along with] that whole notion of a lack of sense of purpose. It’s horrible but fascinating.’.
