Boyzone have been incredibly honest about their highs and lows leading to an emotional reaction from fans. The band released five number one albums and sold 25 million records embedding themselves firmly in music history with hits No Matter What, Love Me For a Reason, and Picture of You.

However, their success came with very real problems and in the new docu-series Boyzone: No Matter What, Keith Duffy, 50, Ronan Keating, 47, Michael ‘Mikey’ Graham, 52, and Shane Lynch, 48, sat down for honest interviews. Across the three episodes, the men spoke about individual struggles with global fame and the sad loss of Boyzone member Stephen Gately, who died in 2003 aged 33 from acute pulmonary oedema, a condition that causes a build-up of fluid in the lungs.

In one part of the show, it was claimed that Gately was given an ultimatum from the press about announcing his sexuality publicly. While Keith called the treatment that Stephen received ‘absolutely scandalous’, their manager Louis Walsh remarked: ‘He got the front page,’ before smiling. Elsewhere, Mikey spoke about using alcohol to help him with feeling less important than his bandmates after being left off an album and rarely seeing posters with his name on in the crowds.

The whole experience affected his confidence, and he didn’t even speak to manager Louis Walsh for seven years. ‘Remember, I was 21. As a kid that was tough, and Louis went from one day speaking with me to never speaking with me for seven years and I never knew why, I had absolutely no idea why. I just thought he didn’t like me,’ he shared. However Louis, 72, said he thought he was ‘happy being the quiet one at the back’.

The series concludes with the band meeting up in a pub, but Mikey decided to skip that reunion. Explaining the reasoning, he said: ‘I don’t want to go back to how I felt for many years. ‘To see them, if it were for too long, would remind me of that and my future is far too important for me to waste it looking back at my past.’. After devouring the episodes, fans shared their thoughts on social media.

Viewer Rebecca wrote on X: ‘Boyzone documentary is absolutely f*****g heartbreaking in so many ways.’. ‘The #Boyzone documentary is really good. Very raw, emotional and powerful. My heart breaks for Stephen all over again. What the press put him through, in life and in death, is horrific,’ added Laura Davidson. Steph O’Hara shared: ‘As a 90s teen, watching the Boyzone documentary is heartbreakingly eye opening. While we were screaming at concerts, there was so much happening behind the scenes. What a vile man Louis Walsh has proved himself to be.’.

‘Loved boyzone as a teenager. Huge huge fan. Watching this documentary was very hard. After watching Louis Walsh’s delight at the Stephen Gatleys coming out newspaper article, you will never be able to convince me Louis Walsh is a good man #boyzone. Ronan is very right about him,’ Nicola weighed in. Fellow fan Simon Duke summarised: ‘The Sky documentary is brilliant TV and a great bit of nostalgia, but also incredibly sad.’.

Many felt emotional seeing the men discuss their troubles. ‘Crying already. As a naive teen I never imagined anything being wrong. As an adult I look back and think, they looked like they were having a fantastic time but reality is they were struggling,’ said Angela Hamilton. ‘Just watching Boyzone no matter what documentary and omg the tears,’ typed Sarah Mc C. The three-parter also covered Ronan and Louis’ fractious relationship. Ronan blasted Louis for ‘not giving a f**k’ about his music career as he pursued TV opportunities including The X Factor.
