After noticing a 'stain' on a client's carpet, a cleaner took it upon herself to try and remove the mark, using a special carpet cleaner and a good deal of elbow grease. Karen Royle, 59, from Formby, Merseyside, believed she had successfully removed the stain and continued with her cleaning duties around the house. However, she was left puzzled when she returned to the same spot on the landing and found the stain had mysteriously reappeared.
The mother-of-four spent another five minutes attempting to scrub away the blue mark, but was left red-faced when the homeowner caught her in the act and explained her error. The homeowner pointed out that the 'stain' was actually a reflection caused by the sun shining through a stained-glass window, creating six blue marks on the landing. Earlier, Karen's shadow had blocked the light, leading her to believe she had successfully removed the mark.
Karen recalled: "I cleaned the downstairs like I always do, I went upstairs, made the bed, went to the landing to grab the vacuum and I thought 'what are those stains?" She added: "I got down on my hands and knees and started scrubbing them with my hands. I sound so stupid. They weren't coming off.".
She further explained: "The gentleman works from home and I didn't want to disturb him so I went to get some foam carpet cleaner and sprayed it, left it for a bit and started scrubbing." A mortified Karen recounted her hilarious mix-up while cleaning, admitting: "I was leaning over it and my shadow made it disappear but I got up and thought 's**t, it's still there'.".
