Hit film The Goonies is all set to air on television this weekend, meaning fans of the cult classic will get a chance to relive the nostalgia from the film that originally released back in 1985. The adventure comedy film derived from a screenplay by Chris Columbus which was in turn based on a story by Steven Spielberg. It stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and Ke Huy Quan.

Also featuring in supporting roles are John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor. The film follows a group of kids who live on the 'Goon Docks' neighbourhood of Astoria, Oregon, who are attempting to save their homes from Foreclosure. However, they end up discovering an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a 17th-century pirate.

To make matters worse, the group of kids are also being pursued by a family of criminals who are trying to get the treasure for themselves. It ended up becoming a box office hit at the time of release, making a cool $125 million from a $19 million budget. Critics also favoured the film and it has since becoming a cult classic, with fans revisiting it time and time again.

In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. The officials deemed it to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," thus granting it the prestigious honour. Fans have shown love for it over the years, with one critic writing on Rotten Tomatoes: "To this day, I still quote this movie. It's hard not to love this movie.".
