Peter Schmeichel has urged Christian Eriksen to consider a move to his boyhood club Ajax as he can no longer thrive at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. Eriksen is closing in on 100 appearances for United, having joined the Red Devils on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. Manchester United beat Premier League rivals Tottenham and Brentford to a deal for Eriksen but the Denmark international has only been a bit-part player at Old Trafford.

Eriksen has started just seven league games so far this season and does not look best suited to Amorim’s style of football. United legend Schmeichel says Eriksen ‘no longer has the energy’ to thrive in the Premier League and believes a move to Ajax would be ‘fantastic’ for the for 32-year-old. Eriksen came through the ranks at Ajax and helped his boyhood club win three Eredivisie titles before playing for Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford and now Manchester United.

‘That [move to Ajax] would be a great step for him,’ Schmeichel told Voetbal Primeur when asked about Eriksen’s future. ‘Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. Nowadays in the Premier League you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes. ‘The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly. At a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.
‘He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field… He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.’. Amorim is intent on sticking by his footballing philosophy despite a largely dismal start to his reign as Manchester United boss. The Premier League giants are just 13th in the table – 14 points outside the Champions League places – with a goal difference of minus six after 24 games.
Last week, former Everton, Real Madrid and Denmark midfielder Thomas Gravesen said he was concerned for Eriksen and claimed his Manchester United career was ‘100% over’. ‘It’s 100 per cent over for Christian Eriksen at Manchester United this summer, and I also fear that his career is over,’ Gravesen told Tipsbladet. ‘Where is he going to go? Where is he going to go and earn 60 million kroner a year? I have a hard time seeing that.
‘He has probably earned the money he should, but I think that the development that Christian has been in the last few years is downward. ‘It is sad to see the situation that Christian Eriksen is in. He is one of the players in Denmark who has given us the most. He has shone and been our best man, so it is sad if his career ends like this.’. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
