Many carers are filled with dread at this time of year. But one 24-hour carer says there are ways their loved ones can offer support. Jan Simonsen has been a full-time carer for his partner for about seven years. He has found ways to manage Christmas and New Year stress - but many other unpaid carers are overwhelmed by the festive period.

A survey by the carer support community Mobilise revealed that 61% of unpaid carers are not looking forward to Christmas. Most wish for a break rather than extra money. Ex-musician Jan pointed out that although his family is feeling the squeeze, it's the physical and emotional toll that really weighs heavily on carers during the holidays.

Even simple tasks like Christmas shopping become monumental challenges, he said. Jan's partner suffers from progressive physical conditions that affect her mobility, leading to unpredictable days. He explained: "I don’t know how she’s going to be from one day to the next. I’ve got to grab the opportunity when it arises. Carers get used to it throughout the year but when it comes to Christmas it’s all the extra things you have to do.".

In addition to the usual stress of arranging gifts, food and family celebrations, carers face extra pressure during the festive season to ensure they have everything they need before GPs and pharmacies close. Jan issued a warning to new carers, saying: "If the person you’re caring for is on medication or needs accessories make sure you get a month’s (supply) in advance so it sees you over Christmas and New Year.
