Presenter Kay Burley recently announced her departure from Sky News live on air. The star, who presents on the broadcaster's breakfast show on weekday mornings, announced the news while on air this morning. Kay made the announcement as she closed the Sky News Breakfast programme. She said: "From a standing start to one of the most recognised and valued brands in global news, it's been an honour and privilege to work with some of the best and hardest working teams in the business.".

She went on to list a number of huge news moments that she reported on before ending her speech with: "Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades: You're awesome. I will post more on my social media and hope to see you around. Please keep in touch.". Fans were devastated by the news and rushed to social media to share their heartbreak over her departure. Her exit from Sky News was due to her retirement, which is no surprise as the presenter has worked on the broadcaster for 36 years since the channel launched in 1989.

Although she was part of Sky News for many decades, not much is known about her salary. Unlike the BBC, Sky News doesn't have to publish their staff's earnings. It was previously claimed the star raked in £500,000 per year but the figures were never confirmed. Some websites also claim her net worth is approximately between £2.4 and £3.2million. Kay once described her salary as "good" during an interview with The Guardian. She said: "I've always been something of a Wigan street-fighter. Always tried to prove myself, always had sharp elbows. That's served me well as I've come up through the ranks. Am I combative? Only when I need to be. I get paid a good salary to ask the hard questions that people at home would want answered.".

During a chat with the Mail on Sunday, she shut down rumours presenters get paid 'silly money for what they do'. Kay explained: "Some people might say television presenters get paid silly money for what they do, but I disagree. It is a challenging job. I am not one for corporate after-dinner speeches. I would rather spend downtime with my family than be making more money. I earn more than enough as it is.".
