Since replacing Jurgen Klopp, adjusting to life at Anfield has been a seamless task for Liverpool manager Arne Slot. The Reds are top of the Premier League and recently destroyed Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 to book their place in the League Cup Final. They have a comfortable six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand and are one of the favourites to win the Champions League. The Dutchman stepped into Klopp’s legendary shoes at Liverpool in June 2024, and has brought his tactical brilliance, rigorous training methods, and dynamic playing philosophy to Merseyside.
Ahead of his first, and last, visit to Goodison Park, Mirror Football takes you inside Slot's world. Slot’s rapid rise in management has brought significant financial rewards. At Feyenoord, he was among the highest-paid coaches in Dutch football history, earning a record salary. When Liverpool came calling, they had to fork out a reported £8 million to release him from his contract. At Anfield, Slot now earns an estimated £6-8 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League.
His exact net worth remains undisclosed, but there’s no doubt his earnings have skyrocketed since his move to England and will continue to grow if he sustains the performance levels his Liverpool side have shown so far. Bergentheim-born Slot spent most of his playing career pulling the strings in midfield. Zwolle was his home for the bulk of his career, where he netted 50 goals in 164 appearances before moving on to NAC Breda and Sparta Rotterdam. When he finally hung up his boots in 2013, it wasn’t the end of his football journey — just the beginning of a new chapter.
Almost immediately, Slot stepped into a coaching role at Zwolle, and it was clear he had a knack for it. He quickly climbed the ranks in Dutch football, moving to Cambuur as an assistant in 2014 and then to AZ Alkmaar as John van den Brom’s right-hand man in 2017. By 2019, AZ handed him the reins, and he wasted no time proving his worth. Under his leadership, AZ soared to the top of the Eredivisie before COVID-19 brought the season to a premature halt. Slot’s stock, however, kept rising.
In 2021, he took over at Feyenoord and led them to an Eredivisie title in 2023, followed by the KNVB Cup in 2024. His tactical intelligence and breath-taking brand of football caught Liverpool’s attention, and Anfield came calling. Despite his growing fame, Slot prefers to keep his personal life away from the limelight. He is married to his wife, Miriam, and the couple has children, though details about them remain private. Slot’s transition to Liverpool came with sacrifices. His wife and children remained in the Netherlands while he moved to England, prioritizing their education and stability.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Slot admitted that spending Christmas away from his family was tough, but he understood the necessity of the decision and hoped they would join him soon. He said: “There are obvious reasons why we (my wife and I) kept the children and my wife in Holland as they are in the last year of their school. "They have to do their exams so for us it was not the ideal moment to bring them towards England. But in the ideal world, you are the manager of Liverpool and still have your family around you.”.
The Dutchman has implemented a no-nonsense approach at Liverpool, emphasising discipline, squad chemistry, and player well-being. One of his most notable rules is making breakfast a compulsory team activity at the training ground. Slot believes shared meals foster unity and enhance team spirit. Additionally, Every morning at 9:45 AM, players must complete a wellness check, tracking sleep quality and overall fitness via a digital app. He has also introduced innovative training methods, including yoga, hydrotherapy, and warm-up drills like chasing tennis balls on cones.
Beyond physical preparation, Slot demands tactical discipline. Training sessions are intense, and competition for starting spots is fierce. Liverpool players have described his approach as meticulous, ensuring no detail is overlooked in their pursuit of silverware.
