The Netflix adaptation of the popular Haro Aso manga first aired in 2020 and quickly cultivated a devoted fanbase. The Japanese sci-fi series follows ‘an aimless gamer and his two friends [who] find themselves in a parallel Tokyo where they’re forced to compete in a series of sadistic games to survive’.

The show, which has been compared to Squid Game in the past, has proved itself a critical success, with rave reviews for the first two seasons and a highly-anticipated third one on the way. And it is outpacing Squid Game on the popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, coming in at 91% compared to the Lee Jung-jae drama at 74%.
Even just sizing up the second season of each show, the critics’ score puts Alice in Borderland at a whopping 91% compared to Squid Game at 86%. If anything, the figures speak for themselves. The second season of Alice In Borderland set a record for the most hours viewed in a week for a Japanese series, per Netflix and, for a time, enjoyed a spot on the Global non-English top 10 shows.
Fans have praised Alice in Borderland’s dark and suspenseful plot and thrilling sequences. ‘This is one of the best TV series I have ever watched! Season one reminded me a lot of Squid Game mixed with a little bit of Hunger Games but leaves off with a better cliffhanger,’ Google reviewer Sarah wrote.
