If you’ve ever wanted to try the ‘no.1 burger in the world’, now’s your chance as it’s finally back in the UK and Ireland. The Big Matt – a fancy tribute to McDonald’s iconic Big Mac – is available to order at all Hawksmoor restaurants across the country as of right now, as a lunchtime special. Priced at £19.50 for the burger and a side of beef dripping fries, it features two dry-aged beef patties, double American cheese, Hawksmoor special sauce, shredded lettuce, onions and homemade cheese.

And yes, there’s a third piece of bread (a bottom bun) in the middle of the whole thing. Just like Maccies. The epic burger, created by Hawksmoor Group executive chef Matt Brown, first launched in 2017 and quickly went viral. It went on to earn the top spot on a list of the world’s best burgers in 2023, as ranked by the World’s Best Steak Restaurants. The Slice is your weekly guide to what’s happening in London, so if you’re looking for restaurant reviews, drinks deals or just a great new exhibition to visit on a rainy Saturday in the capital, we’ve got you covered.

The burger has been added to Hawksmoor menus in the UK previously for short periods of time, but it hasn’t been available to order in any of the London restaurants since 2022 – much to the chagrin of fans who have spent the last two years begging for its return. It was briefly sold in Edinburgh and Liverpool last year, while poor burger lovers in Manchester haven’t been able to get their hands on it since 2017.
But now all their prayers have been answered as the cult menu item is back. It’s not sticking around forever though, so you’ll have to be quick if you want to try it. People online are already excited by The Big Matt’s return, with Instagram users ‘drooling’ over a video of the ‘extravagant’ burger. @oreganoandolive commented: ‘Oh lord.’. As @dejdoeslondon replied: ‘Yeah this is a NEED, not want.’.
And @sammy_nolook thought it sounded ‘delightful’, while @pgberkshire added: ‘About time this came back.’. As well as The Big Matt, Hawksmoor has several other new dishes on their lunchtime menu for the next six months. This includes a thick 35-day dry aged rump steak and Café de Paris butter, served with beef-dripping fries and a steakhouse salad (£26), as well as roast hake with woodland mushrooms, creamed potatoes and lemon butter sauce (£26).
There’s also charcoal roasted chicken, with roast garlic, lemon and parsley (£24), and a vegan option of charcoal roasted butternut squash, shiitake and oyster mushrooms with cashew ricotta (£10). If £19.50 is a little steep for you, there’s another top burger option you can try in London that’s cheaper – Black Bear Burger. The burger joint’s Miso Bacon Burger was recently crowned the UK’s best burger at the National Burger of the Year awards.
The tempting stack features two 45-day aged beef patties, cheese, smoked bacon, miso butter mayo and onion sandwiched between a bespoke sesame seed bun and costs £10.90. You can order it from any of Back Bear’s locations, including Brixton, Exmouth Market, Victoria, Shoreditch, or Canary Wharf. This marks the first time Black Bear has won the prestigious burger award, after it previously went to Bleeker Burger in 2024.
Alternatively, there’s always the OG Big Mac at McDonald’s, and it’ll only cost you about a fiver (give or take a few pence, depending where you’re ordering from). Do you have a story to share?.
