Those with even a mild fear of heights may want to take deep breaths before stepping inside this luxurious hotel. The Grand Hyatt in Shanghai, China is located on the 53rd to 87th floors of the city’s Jin Mao Tower. The hotel’s height – coupled with it’s mind-mending spiral design – means that guests have warned those with vertigo or a fear of heights to stay well away. The five-star hotel, which opened in 2000, occupies a section of the 420-metre-high skyscraper in Shanghai.

It boasts 548 luxurious rooms that overlook the city’s skyline below, and was once the highest hotel in the world. Inside, there are eight restaurants and bars to explore. There’s also an indoor swimming pool and a skywalk. Cloud 9, the hotel’s cocktail bar, sits on the 87th floor and is described as ‘the pinnacle of the Jin Mao Tower’. Guests can enjoy 360 views of the city below. Prices for the unique hotel vary depending on when you visit and the room you choose, with several options on offer. The cheapest option is the 1 Queen Bed Room, with prices starting from around £120 on Booking.com.

Responding to the clip, which shows a guest bravely dangling their phone over the balcony, user @iammattymarz said: ‘I would throw up and cry if I looked down.’. Another user, @Ninja_Calf, said: ‘Just the video gives me anxiety.’ While @_lembz wrote: ‘The vertigo from just watching this is insane.’. Others have said that it triggers there intrusive thoughts. ‘So, I’m never staying at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai,’@alisonrfoster, wrote. ‘The call of the void would be way too great. The video alone is too much.’.

Others compared it to the reactor shaft in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. One user joked: ‘Didn’t Darth Vader push the Emperor down there?’. Despite the alarmed response on social media though, the hotel has a 4.5-star rating on TripAdvisor based on thousands of reviews. However, guests have warned those with vertigo to avoid looking down. One reviewer, who awarded the hotel five stars, wrote: ‘Stayed one night on the 75th floor. Very nice room, luxurious bathroom and ultra comfy beds.
