BT's website went down for thousands of customers who reported problems accessing their emails today. The Downdetector website, which measures outages, was hit with more than 5,000 complaints logged from customers. Many complainants had difficulties getting into their emails, with most experiencing connection issues shortly after 5am. A further five per cent had connection problems with their broadband.
Plenty of BT users took to X to voice their frustration, with a number of them complaining that BT had not updated its website to report the outage. One person tweeted: "Hi BT UK, can you please explain why yet again - and it appears to be UK-wide - your email login site is inaccessible again? Thank you, I look forward to receiving an update asap.". Another wrote: "I can see the email server is down but nothing on your site to let us know there are issues. Come on guys it wouldn’t be hard to add a service status banner advising that you have issues and be assured you are working on them. Customer Care 101!".
A third user posted: "BT UK, looks like your email service is down but no information or updates anywhere? Can we get a status update or at least confirmation that there is an issue? I have been waiting on your customer services chat and phone for 30 mins...". Yet another added: "BT UK, your email servers are down, and the papers are covering it. Yet no update from BT—no admission, no ETA (estimated time of arrival) for a fix. Support is overwhelmed with the same issue. Just tell us what's happening so your team can focus on the fix!".
A BT spokesman said: "We’re aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app. "We’re investigating the cause of this and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. “Alternatively, customers can switch off Wi-fi and use mobile data to access their email. No other BT service is impacted.". Today’s outages come as BT plans to raise mobile and broadband prices up by £3 a month from March. The increases will apply to contracts which began after April 10 last year.
