The latest episode of Channel 4's gripping series 24 Hours in Police Custody on Monday night (27 January) revisited the harrowing case of a rapist named Mohammed Altaher, who preyed on victims he found on the dating site Grindr. The instalment, titled 'The Predator', showcased the intricate efforts of Bedfordshire Police's Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team at Luton Police Station as they confronted the challenges of prosecuting sexual assault crimes. The case revolved around Altaher's violent attacks on two men, with authorities striving to amass adequate evidence to press charges despite his claims of consensual encounters.
Reports from August and September 2019 led to independent allegations by two victims, whose experiences Prosecutor Nigel Ogborne described in court. The court heard Altaher persisted in his assaults even after consent was revoked, committing rape in an "aggressive manner", with one victim testifying to being drugged with MCAT and left feeling "like a zombie".
One victim identified only as Jamie, recounted his ordeal, revealing, "I never met anyone like that before who wanted to do something so horrible. There was a long time when I was having nightmares of it happening again. I definitely think I'm getting stronger but it just takes time and lots of help as well.".
Following his arrest at his home address for the first victim, Altaher sat for questioning with detectives, during which he denied the accusations of rape and was even caught smirking at the officer questioning him. Furthermore, he boasted about his numerous encounters on the dating app, claiming to have slept with hundreds of men.
