Anton Du Beke ended up losing £15,000 of his own money - in one of the most extraordinary games in the history of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire quiz show. The Strictly Come Dancing judge, 58, sailed through the first few rounds but then struggled with a £32,000 question themed around dance and musicals. He 'asked the audience' and then said if he got it wrong he would stump up the lost money himself for his chosen charity - The Sick Children's Trust - as he had reached £16,000 and wanted to risk it to win more.
Unfortunately for him he was wrong, meaning he won just £1000 on the night and would top up the prize himself with another £15,000. Afterwards Anton shook his head and joked: "You wait until I tell my wife. 'How did you get on?' she'll say. Oh they cancelled the show!". Jeremy Clarkson then reminded him it would be going on TV and has now been seen by millions. The question that stumped Anton was 'Which Tony Award winning musical features a mash up called Elephant Love Medley?'.
The correct answer was Moulin Rouge but Anton dismissed the idea it was in that musical, later saying it would be "ridiculous" if he turned out to be wrong given his background in theatre and on stage. He used his 50-50 and then asked the audience, with the majority saying they thought it was Book Of Mormon which was his first thought. He added: "This is going to be a nightmare if I go home after this.
"I'll tell you what I am going to do. I am going to go with the Book Of Mormon and if I get it wrong I am going to give the charity £15,000 of my own money. I'm gonna go for Book Of Mormon, final answer.". Sadly for Anton it was the wrong answer. Last week ahead of the show airing, host Jeremy Clarkson told the Mirror: "When that cropped up, I thought well ‘this was tailor made for you’ and then it wasn’t. It’s a bit like me not knowing a Nico Rosberg question.".
Anton's amazing game tonight came just a week after Sir Stephen Fry won £250,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? with Clarkson helping him on one question during a celebrity version of the series. Former QI host, actor and comedian Sir Stephen also consulted with Pointless star and author Richard Osman on the £500,000 question, by using his phone a friend lifeline. On receiving help from host Clarkson, Sir Stephen said: "Jeremy is very encouraging, and he was great with the question that took me to a quarter of a million.".
