An episode of Escape to the Country aired on Friday (December 20) saw dreams dashed when a couple realised their budget wouldn't stretch far enough for their ideal Welsh retreat. During the popular BBC series, host Alistair Appleton was helping Leela and Peter, an Epping-based duo, hunt for a picturesque home on the Gower Peninsula with a budget of £500,000. The property needed to be a three-bedroom, detached house with grand garden space, sea views, and potential for holiday letting.

With past summers spent enjoying picnics and beach fun with their children on the Gower, the couple were also avid golfers seeking peace away from the hustle and bustle they were accustomed to near Stansted Airport. Alistair did his best to accommodate their wishes, showcasing several Gower properties, but soon had to broaden the search to fit the financial constraints. This led them to Pontarddulais, stepping away from the peninsula.

Despite moving the search area, the pair was introduced to a 1990s-built home, replete with utility room, dining room, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and masterful ash woodwork in the ample hallway and landing. Additionally, there was a detached garage linked to a workshop and a moderately sized garden, reports Wales Online.

Facing the guessing game of the property's value, Leela ventured a guess of "Top of our budget - £499,000," with Peter pitching close at £495,000 which was spot on to the asking price. After an intense week, it emerged that the couple had to broaden their horizons beyond their preferred locale to find their dream home.
