There's nothing quite like the charm of a brand-new wooden coffee table gracing your living room - but let's face it, how long does it really stay pristine?. Not very, is the likely answer. It's almost inevitable that spills will occur, sending you into a frenzy to wipe them up before they leave a permanent mark. However, it's not just spills that are the enemy of wooden surface - failing to use a coaster can lead to those dreaded white rings marring your table.
Many might think these watermarks are a lost cause, particularly if they've been there for ages, but there's a surprising household condiment that could save the day. A plea for help was posted on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, with someone asking: "Hi guys, any suggestions on how I can get rid of these white drink marks from this light oak coffee table, please?".
The overwhelming response in the comments was to use mayonnaise. One person simply put: "Mayonnaise", while another commented: "I've read that mayonnaise works", accompanied by a shrugging emoji. It appears that the oily nature of mayo can indeed lift those stubborn stains, and the best part? You can snag a jar from Sainsbury's for a mere 70p.
All you have to do is apply a dollop of mayonnaise to a microfibre cloth and then dab it directly onto the stain. After the mayo has covered the offending marks, cover it with a paper towel and let it soak for a few hours. Check it afterwards, and if the stain has disappeared, simply wipe it away. If not, repeat the process, but leave it overnight.
