Manchester United and Scotland legend Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84. Known at Old Trafford as 'The King', Law was one of United's greatest-ever players, part of the Holy Trinity alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best, a scorer of 237 goals for the club during an 11-year spell. A Ballon d'Or winner, he also scored perhaps the most famous Manchester derby goal ever - albeit for the other side.

On Friday his family released a statement, which simply read: "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.".

Manchester United posted on social media: “Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. “Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”.

Law had been battling with dementia since being diagnosed in 2021. At the age of 81 he announced that he had Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. Former Old Trafford heroes Nobby Stiles and Sir Bobby Charlton had also suffered in recent years from degenerative brain disease, before their deaths in 2020 and 2023 respectively.
