Manchester United will hold a minute's silence to pay tribute to Denis Law on Sunday. Law’s family announced on Friday evening that the United legend had passed away aged 84. The Scottish striker scored 237 goals in 404 appearances between 1962 and 1973 and is United’s third-highest goal scorer, behind only Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia in 2021 and a statement from his family read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. “We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”.

United said in a statement: "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.".

United host Brighton at Old Trafford at 2pm on Sunday in the Premier League and will pay tribute to Law before kick-off with a minute’s silence. Ruben Amorim’s players will don black armbands for the match, following the lead of the United youngsters, who put on black armbands for the second half of their Youth Cup fixture on Friday night.

Law is the only person who has two statues at Old Trafford, underlining his status at the club. In their obituary, United described him as the "darling of the Stretford End" and said he was "idolised by United fans of all ages". And the words of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson summed up his legacy at the club.
