Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) has decided to change her not guilty plea in EastEnders after a traumatic incident in court. The BBC soap stalwart is currently facing trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Last year, her sinister fiancé Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) smothered his comatose wife Debbie with a pillow, hoping it would solve his monetary issues.

After Sonia accidentally implicated herself, he began a campaign to try and free her from prison. His plan was hindered when her sister Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) discovered the truth, and he’s subsequently held her hostage in a storage lockup for months.

With poor Son’ facing the prospect of a life behind bars, Reiss tried to convince the nurse who had seen her lurking around Debbie’s care home on the night of her death to change her witness statement. The desired result wasn’t achieved, and only worsened Sonia’s desperation to be free.

In tonight’s episode, the residents wondered whether Bianca would arrive at the eleventh hour and show her support. As far as they’re aware, she vanished after assaulting Reiss and hasn’t been seen since. Sonia’s solicitor visited her in the cell, where she lay upset and pained. Heavily pregnant, she wondered if she could cope for much longer.
The solicitor advised that Reiss’ meddling in the case would likely convince the jury that she wasn’t injured, but Sonia remained adamant that they would see her true colours. Unfortunately, she was told to prepare for the worst. The nurse giving evidence said that Sonia was hostile when they met in the care home, and that her behaviour was unusual. Reiss was furious, and stood up shouting.
