Weather warnings have been issued across all of the UK, with people urged to stay indoors as forecasters predicted wind speeds of up to 100mph during Storm Éowyn. The worst weather conditions are expected in Northern Ireland and Scotland, where a rare red warning for wind has been issued. In Northern Ireland, the warning is in force from 7am until 2pm, with the Met Office saying "very strong winds" will cause "very dangerous conditions with widespread disruption and significant impacts.".

In Scotland, the warning has been issued from 10am until 5pm on Friday. It covers the central belt including Glasgow and Edinburgh, stretching north on the west coast to Jura in Argyll and Bute and south to Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway. Forecasters said flying debris could result in danger to life in the areas covered by the red warning. There is also a risk of large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes, the Met Office said.

Harsh weather conditions could also cause "very dangerous driving conditions" with fallen trees on roads, as well as disruption to public transport including delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights. The storm is expected to cause power cuts, which will affect other services such as mobile phone coverage too.

There is also a risk of damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down. People in Scotland and Northern Ireland have been urged to stay indoors during the storm. Schools and nurseries across Scotland will be closed, except in five council areas, while non-urgent planned procedures have been postponed in NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Lothian.
