Millions of workers taking on extra shifts or a short-term contract this Christmas after being urged to check their pay. HMRC has published a new video, explaining how seasonal staff and students employed over the Christmas period are still legally entitled to receive the minimum wage. Minimum wage for someone aged 21 and over is currently £11.44 an hour, while those aged 18 to 20 should be paid at least £8.60 an hour.
If you're under 18 or you're an apprentice, the minimum wage is £6.40 an hour. As well as checking your hourly rate of pay, HMRC says you should also look out for unpaid working time, such as time spent cleaning and closing premises, training, or picking up extra hours.
In a video published on social media, HMRC said: “Have you started a Christmas job? No matter how long you’ve been employed for, you are legally entitled to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage. This includes temporary seasonal staff working in shops, hotels, garden centres, Christmas markets, restaurants and warehouses.
“Always make sure that you check your pay and look out for any deductions, or unpaid working time that could take you below the minimum wage. If you think you’ve been short changed, even if you no longer work for that employer, we’re here to help.”.
Many companies actually pay their workers more than the minimum rate - but if you're not being paid correctly, there are some steps you can follow. If an employer has not paid you the minimum wage, you should first speak to your boss to try and get the issue fixed.
