A judge has ordered that a song by Adele is to be pulled worldwide, amid an ongoing plagiarism claim. The Set Fire To The Rain singer included Million Years Ago on her third album, 25, which was released in 2015. However, Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes has alleged that the hit plagiarized the music of his samba track, Mulheres (Women), which was recorded by Martinho da Vila on an album in 1995.
According to reports, Geraes is suing for lost royalties, $160,000 in moral damages, plus songwriting credit on Adele’s track. In a decision announced on Friday, in Rio de Janeiro’s sixth commercial court, judge Victor Torres ordered Million Years Ago to be pulled worldwide, including on streaming services, pending further activity in the case.
The Guardian reports that the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony and Universal, Adele’s labels, could be fined $8,000 ‘per act of non-compliance’ – while the music companies are able to appeal the decision. The injunction was made by judge Victor Torres on Friday, in Rio de Janeiro’s sixth commercial court, pending further activity in the continuing plagiarism case.
The ruling, obtained by AFP, orders Sony and Universal to stop ‘immediately and globally, from using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing the song Million Years Ago, by any modality, means, physical or digital support, streaming or sharing platform’.
