There are some opinions that you should really keep to yourself. Many parents face the dilemma of whether or not to ask for opinions when choosing a baby name. On the one hand, you want to make sure you're making the right decision and not burdening your child with an awful name, but on the other hand, having people criticise a name you really like can be devastating. One woman found out the hard way that constructive criticism is always better after she "burst out laughing" when her friend told her the name she picked out for her child. The woman believed her friend was "messing with" her when she first said it, so she laughed along, thinking it was a joke - but the mum-to-be was deadly serious.
In a post on Reddit, the woman said her friend had "joked about some really insane names" in the early days of her pregnancy, and the pair had previously laughed together about "cringe" baby names. Because of this, she believed they were on the same page regarding "reasonable" baby names. But the mum-to-be has chosen a name that wouldn't seem out of place in a fantasy video game like Genshin Impact or Skyrim, and the woman was left baffled by her bizarre decision.
The woman - who did not reveal the chosen name for privacy reasons - said: "It's something straight out of Genshin Impact or Skyrim. Not the real name, but think Zephyr Rocket or Banjo Fox. I honestly thought she was messing with me, so I laughed. Not like a mean laugh, just a genuine reaction. "But nope. That was the real name. She got super quiet and was like, 'That is the name'. I could tell immediately I messed up, so I tried to backpedal, but she looked kinda hurt and changed the subject. Later, a mutual friend told me she was upset and thought I was being rude.".
Following her reaction to the name, the woman has since been left out of other friendly gatherings the mum-to-be has held and she's now worried her friend is cutting her out of her life because of it. Commenters on the post, however, were firmly on the woman's side, with many saying parents who give their children "ridiculous" baby names do need to be told that they are setting their kids up for nasty comments to be made about them for the rest of their lives.
One person said: "She conditioned you to have this reaction by repeatedly joking about the baby name, so what was she expecting when she presented you with a ridiculous name as the final one?" Another added: "These kids with these weird names are gonna hate their parents. Names are important; they are there for your entire life, and they'll be made fun of for your entire life.".
