Jamie Oliver fans were left baffled after he 'glugged' expensive olive oil and salt over his dishes during last night's episode of his £1 meal series. The British celebrity chef, 49, has returned to TV screens for the new year with Jamie's £1 Wonders And Money Saving Meals on Channel 4 - a new budget meal series to combat the cost of living crisis in the UK.
In last night's episode, Jamie made a delicious mushroom soup with homemade soda bread, ham hock and parsley sauce and a 'fakeaway' chicken burger. He claims in his show that each meal would work out at £1 a portion or even less - but viewers were quick to point out that this does not include the price of olive oil.
As Jamie prepared his mushroom soup, he added a generous serving of oil to the top of his bread to make it 'nice and golden' in the air fryer, adding more to a pan to fry his soffritto mix. Fans were quick to accuse the chef of 'glugging' the oil - which has soared in price in recent months - over his dishes, and not including it in the final price tally.
Though Jamie claimed the soup would cost £1.03 per portion to make at home, he admitted: 'I'm taking it that you've got salt, pepper and oil.'. The meticulous price breakdown was calculated from an average of the ingredients from the UK's three biggest supermarkets, correct as of October 2024.
