They later confirmed the victim’s condition is not believed to be life-threatening. Police dog teams have been scouring for clues along Oxford Street this afternoon after the attack. Tourists looked on as detectives trawled for CCTV footage of the incident and forensics experts meticulously searched the scene.

A number of shops including HMV and JD sports have been forced to close because they are inside the crime scene cordon. One shop worker told Metro: ‘This is an horrific incident. It’s a bad look for London with all the tourists seeing the police and not being able to shop at some stores. Takings are high on New Year’s Day so it’s a blow to businesses.’.

Tourist Silvia, 28, from Portugal told Metro: ‘I come to London for New Year a lot. I love London but this is bad for the image of a city.’.
