The debate over Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card for Arsenal against Wolves has taken another turn, with the PGMOL issuing an update on the reasons for the dismissal. Lewis-Skelly brought down Wolves' Matt Doherty during the first half at Molineux, stopping the hosts countering after an Arsenal corner. Those on the pitch appeared to anticipate a yellow card from Michael Oliver, only for the referee to brandish a red.
Arsenal are expected to appeal the decision, with manager Mikel Arteta adamant it was not a red card offence. "That's for the club to decide what the best decision is," the Spaniard said. "I think it's that obvious, maybe we don't even need to [appeal]," he added. "[Lewis-Skelly] is really happy now that the team won and we found a way to win it.".
The Premier League Match Centre account issued a statement on the incident shortly after Lewis-Skelly's dismissal. "The referee’s call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play," the explanation read.
Now, though, Sky Sports carries a more detailed explanation of the PGMOL's stance. "PGMOL's position on the incident is the challenge is extremely late, the point of contact is high and video evidence supports that conclusion," the broadcaster explains.
Arsenal still won at Wolves despite the red card, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring the only goal of the game. However, unless the dismissal is overturned, Lewis-Skelly will miss the Premier League match against Manchester City and the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle.
