*SPOILERS FOR SQUID GAME SEASON 2*. Squid Game viewers are questioning which character could be inside a coffin returned to the surviving players in season 3. Last month the blockbuster South Korean series, which first hit screens in 2022, returned with a new batch of episodes. After surviving the shocking events of season 1 when 456 players in dire financial situations risked their lives playing a series of children’s games for the chance to win ₩45.6 billion, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) decided to seek revenge and re-enter the game.

As the game got closer to its conclusion, he managed to convince some fellow players to stage a revolt and fight back before any of them died. Among them was his old friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), or player 390, who was being chased by creditors after borrowing money to keep his pub open. However, in the final scene of the season, Jung-bae was shot and killed when the pair were betrayed by one of their fellow players, who was actually the man in control of the game – the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun).

This week it was confirmed the upcoming third and final season would be returning in June, with first look-images also being released, which showed the main character alive, but in handcuffs. Another showed the surviving players in the warehouse in which they live during the game, with some leaning over a black coffin decorated with a pink ribbon as they pay their respects. The lid of the coffin is open, with Player 120 Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), looking down into the body likely inside.

Still on the floor around the players are also pools of blood from those who were killed during the deadly uprising. Discussing the images, Reddit users debated who might be inside the coffin. ‘I wonder who’s in the coffin in the third pic. I think it could be Jung-bae. Maybe they brought in his body to show everyone the consequences of their actions,’ user HurricaneWasTaken posted. ‘Agreed, especially cuz I think I see Dae-ho and Myung-gi in the background of the shot, so the character those four would react most to being in a coffin would be Jung-bae,’ EmilyJaneDancer shared.

‘I agree so much with this I thought of it as well. I think the reason all X’s are there because they are the ones who rebelled and they bring Jung- bae’s body there to show that their actions have consequences,’ BumblebeeConfident35 added. However, NoKameron theorised: ‘I think it can be Gi-hun, he’s alive though, and this is just dramatic way to return him to the games.’. ‘That makes way more sense than me initially thinking they were gonna return Gi-hun tied up or something in the coffin. But it’s probably likely he’s gonna have to do the walk of shame back into the room I guess,’ kellzzz added.

After the finale aired, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to Variety about his decision to leave season 2 with that traumatic close. ‘When you think about Gi-hun’s journey, I thought that that was an adequate moment to put a stop and give him a little bit of closure along that long story arc. And then from that moment on, in the third season, having that sense of huge guilt and sense of failure weighing heavily on him — how is Gi-hun going to carry on his mission? That’s the story that’ll further unfold,’ he said.

Looking ahead to season 3 he teased: ‘But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.’.
