There are three of us in my marriage... that's how I like it

I got married last summer and my husband and I recently had our first baby together. You might, then, imagine that the screensaver on his phone would be a photo of his precious newborn son, or me, the person who pushed his only child from her body. But you’d be wrong.

Instead, it’s a photo of my best friend, or more accurately, our best friend, Martha. A close-up picture of her beaming face fills the screen. And although she changes her own screensaver more often than I change my bra, last time I checked it was a photo of my husband, a snap of him holding our son, who is wearing the outfit she bought him.

When I shared a video about how my husband’s phone screensaver is a photo of my best friend, the internet was outraged. ‘Red flag!’ the comments screamed. ‘Surely that must be his sister,’ someone wrote. ‘Girl, if they’re not sleeping together now, they will be soon,’ said another.

Despite that the three of us were together when I uploaded the video – while watching a play, with my best friend sitting between me and my husband – users were begging me to pull the plug on both my marriage and the friendship. ‘Run! Before you get your heart broken.’.

Write Flora Gill (pictured) married Adam last year. As well as sharing a baby, the couple share a best friend, Martha. I found the outrage baffling. My husband, Adam, and Martha have been close for years, but I met her first when we were 16-year-old Buffy The Vampire Slayer-loving virgins at boarding school.
