This Morning viewers have taken to social media in disgust following a sex-themed segment on Thursday's programme. Hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard introduced a couple named Karen and Ray, who volunteered to try out so-called 'female Viagra' on the show. Karen was seen taking the supplement live on air, before she and Ray left the This Morning sofa to go to a hotel around the corner. The couple promised they would return later in the show to report on how the pill had worked for them.
Fans of the show, however, were not as enthusiastic as Karen, who said: "I'm looking forward to it" as she departed the studio after taking the medication. One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: "What the bloody hell am I watching? Television X?" while another commented: "They will have guests having sex on air the way this show is going.". A third viewer said: "This is an abysmal segment for 10 in the morning," and a fourth added: "How low does this show get?".
Host Ben Shephard did point out to the couple that "you are doing this on live television," to which Ray replied: "Just the tablets!" while his partner Karen giggled. Ben checked they were both comfortable with going off to the hotel and reporting back, and asked if they had any concerns, but the couple replied they were both fine with the experiment. Karen took the tablet while Cat asked resident doctor Zoe Williams exactly what was in the pill. "There are two supplements that some studies support the notion that they can help with libido, one is called maca root which is a Peruvian root, and the other is fenugreek, which raises testosterone levels," she explained.
Karen and Ray then departed as Ben told them they had about two hours to try out the pill before returning to the studio to give their verdict. It echoes an experiment the show did nearly three decades ago, when the hosts were Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan. Three couples were invited onto the show where they were given the then-new male pill Viagra, before they spent time in a hotel and reported back on their experiences an hour and a half later.
In a Channel 5 documentary about their careers that aired last year, Richard and Judy spoke about the segment. Judy said: "Looking back now, yes I'm sure it was incredibly crude but at the same time it felt very energetic and very vibrant.". Richard added: "Everybody was talking about viagra, we went a step further and we tested it live on air.". Did This Morning go too far with the viagra segment? Vote in our poll HERE to have your say.
In nostalgic footage aired by Channel 5, viewers watched as Richard delicately asked one of the participants: "Put it this way then, I'll choose my words carefully, was it what you hoped for? "Was it everything you hoped for and more?". The response from one woman, affirming her satisfaction amidst studio laughter and her joking hesitation to return to work, indicated success. Judy revealed: "There was a producer prowling up and down the corridor outside their rooms in the hotel with walkie-talkies. It's just absolutely, looking back now it's awful!".
At the end of the show, the couple returned to the This Morning sofa to update Ben and Cat on how they found the viagra, with Karen admitting: "We had a good result. It made Ray very happy and I think the effects haven't worn off yet.". After a successful trial, Karen and Ray revealed that they plan to carry on taking the supplement. "I'm taking the rest of the packet home," she added. Like this story?
