The boy was approached by a dog without an owner in Leven Place in the Castlepark area of the town, the force said in a statement.
A three-year-old boy has had surgery after being bitten in the face by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type dog.
Police Scotland has appealed for witnesses to the incident in Irvine, southwest Scotland, at around 6pm on Thursday.
The animal, described as a cream-coloured "Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type of dog", bit him in the face.
