In January, the US President reportedly clashed with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen over Greenland, saying he would consider imposing tariffs on Denmark if he doesn’t get his way - though the pair have had arguments about this in the past.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Mr Trump said last year on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Tensions between Mr Trump and Ms Frederiksen arose in 2019 as he scrapped a trip to Denmark, blaming the Danish PM for making a “nasty” statement when she rejected his idea of buying Greenland and calling it an “absurd discussion”.
“If Russia were to send missiles towards the US, the shortest route for nuclear weapons would be via the North Pole and Greenland," Marc Jacobsen, an associate professor at the Royal Danish Defence College, told the BBC.
“President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”.
