Call the Midwife fans were left shocked on Sunday (January 26) as an EastEnders star arrived on the BBC period drama. During the latest trip to the 1970s, Nonnatus House prepared for the arrival of Sister Catherine (Molly Vevers) who surprisingly turned up a day early.
Elsewhere, Peggy Wrigley (Rachel Tucker) arrived at Dr. Turner's (Stephen McGann) surgery and desperately requested an abortion. The 46 year old was already a mum to seven children and assured the GP that she didn't want to have another baby, nor did her husband know she was pregnant.
Dr. Turner assured Peggy that although abortion was now legal, it would need authorisation from more than one doctor and was she referred to St Cuthbert's where she also considered sterilisation. Peggy also attended the mother and baby clinic with her eldest daughter, Gail (Louise O'Dowd), who is pregnant and has high blood pressure. When Peggy arrived home she was seen preparing dinner for her family including husband Jimmy Wrigley, played by Joel Beckett, who is a docker.
Later in the episode, Peggy had a miscarriage before undergoing surgery where she tragically died due to complications leaving her children and Jimmy devastated. Although Jimmy first appeared to be cold-hearted and bitter, he dedicated himself to being a family man. In a heart-warming scene, he supported Gail through her labour in place of her late mum, which brought some much-needed joy to the family.
