An expert has urged people to look out for some Christmas themed 50 pence coins that could be “worth a fortune”. These sought after pieces could come up in your change if you are lucky. In a video posted to social media platform TikTok, coin expert known as the Coin Collector UK, told his followers to look out for any Christmas 50ps from Gibraltar. As a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar uses its own currency.
However, its worth is tied to British sterling and although it is not legal tender in the UK, the coins are the same weight, size and metal as British coins. They also occasionally come up in circulation in the UK. The Coin Collector explained: “These Christmas 50p from Gibraltar are worth a fortune so keep any that you do come across in your change. I've already done a video on the Isle of Man Christmas 50ps, which sell for some very good money and the same also goes for the Gibraltar ones.”.
He pinpointed the exact coins to look for. The first is dated 2000 and features an image of Mary and baby Jesus. This can be worth £90 to £110 for a circulated version, and up to £130 for an uncirculated one. He continued: “You see here some of the notable ones - the Madonna and child from 2000. This one goes for about £90 to £110 in circulated condition.”.
Next he pointed out a 50 pence piece from 1998 which has an image of Santa in a chimney. This can fetch up to £110 for a circulated coin or £130 uncirculated. A more valuable coin from 2002 features the image of two shepherds and a flock of sheep. These are worth £150 to £160 circulated or up to £180 uncirculated, according to the expert.
