Today marks the first anniversary of Derek Draper's death at the age of 56 - and his grieving family will likely be remembering their last, cherished moments with the father. The former political lobbyist and psychotherapist passed away on January 3, 2024, after suffering severe health complications as a result of contracting coronavirus in March 2020. By the December 2023, his condition worsened following a cardiac arrest, and he died with his devoted wife, Kate Garraway, by his side, with the brave broadcaster keeping his hand in hers until the very end.
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate today grilled Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Labour's plans for a new 'National Care Service', which may not be implemented until 2028. Admitting she herself was grappling with serious debt due to Derek's care costs, Kate expressed concern for other families navigating similar situations.
Her call is characteristic of Kate, 57, who has documented her family's ordeal to highlight the difficulties faced by so many across the country, as well as the devastating effects of long Covid. The mum-of-two previously opened up about her husband's final, poignant conversation with their two children before he was rushed to hospital one last time.
She told how, while sitting in the ambulance with an oxygen mask, Derek was able to speak to his family, expressing one final selfless request. According to Kate, proud dad Derek told Darcey, 18, and 14-year-old Billy: "You're the best children anyone could ask for. Look after mum, be good for her." This would be the last time Derek saw his two children before going into a coma.
