The dungeon race is almost on, and whether you're intending to participate to try to bag the trophy or wait until the dust has settled, here's everything you need to know. Destiny 2 is about to enter the final epilogue for its Light and Darkness Saga in February, ahead of the new Codename: Apollo expansion this summer. Episode Heresy Act 1 launches on Tuesday, February 4 while the new Destiny 2 dungeon, Sundered Doctrine, opens to players a couple of days later, on Friday, February 7.

Bungie introduced Contest Mode to dungeons at the tail end of last year in a franchise first, with Vesper’s Host (via TWID blog post) and we're seeing the same thing with the new Destiny 2 dungeon this month; the Dungeon Race works similarly to the Raids modifier, with more aggressive enemies, no character Power advantages, an enrage mechanic that limits the number of phases or time players have in certain encounters, and incorporates Resurrection Tokens.

These modifiers are active for the first 48 hours, but unlike Vesper's Host, the new Destiny 2 dungeon will crown only one fireteam winner as opposed to a podium finish for the top three. The prize? An honest-to-goodness trophy, which is a tad cooler than the hoodie last year. It'll be smaller than the Raid belts – which were amazing, and you can see over on Twitter if you missed them – but will be just as unique, and made in collaboration with cosplay and props maker, Hench and Scrap.

Players in Contest Mode can also earn a work shirt with a hood (not to be confused with a hoodie) a wristband, and title pins. So, just like last year, completing Sundered Doctrine in the Contest Mode window will let you earn those items. But it won't be easy! The recommended power level is 1995 if you're interested in joining the race. If that sounds like a lot, don't worry as the new Destiny 2 dungeon's Contest Mode will end once the 48 hours are over, allowing the rest of the playerbase to earn in-game emblems, weapons and other rewards. Normal mode will also be available alongside Contest Mode within that window if a fireteam successfully wins the race.
