Drivers may be snubbing a key button in their car when trying to demist and thaw out their windscreens. That's according to the Windscreen Company Group, which has issued three simple steps to get windows clearer, quicker, and motorists on their way. Despite the overriding temptation to blast the heating the moment you get into the car, this is actually not the most effective way to clear windscreens immediately, the company said. Instead, even in sub-zero conditions, it is best to reach for the air conditioning first. It says: "Vehicles with air conditioning should make use of this addition, as turning the air conditioning on will remove the moisture from the air.".

It added: "Some vehicles have a dedicated button for demisting the rear window and demisting the front window. Once this has started, wait for the windows to demist, as wiping your windows or opening your windows may slow down the process." Cars without a dedicated demist button, but with air conditioning, should whack the air con on at a low heat to achieve the same effect. An added tip, it said, is to use the circulating air option which contributes to heating the entire car more quickly. If your car is without an air conditioning button, it urges people to open a window to create the same effect.

"Provided the weather outside is dry, opening the window will let moisture out and improve the dryness of the air within your vehicle, thus reducing the potential for a misted windscreen and windows," they said. Only once this process is underway can the heaters go on, and directed straight at the windscreen. They can be turned up to full fan - but not full heat, the firm recommended. "Turning the heater on helps warm the windows so that they are above the dew point. The best option is to turn on all your heaters and point any vents towards your windscreen and side windows.".
